Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Her aunt worked during the night shift as a nurse, so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay instantly fell in love with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself via artwork. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has been for generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma and decided to make a documentary about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become interested in production for broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash from a home belonging to a jury member. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay was hired right from college to be a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has launched lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
